Plants shrubby to nearly treelike, much branched, to 2 m (6.6 ft) high. Stems gray-green, to 5 cm (2 in) in diameter. Ribs 1214 with transverse notches. Areoles to 10 mm (0.4 in) apart. Spines golden yellow, becoming grayish white with dark tips, thickened basally. Central spines usually 3, awl shaped, to 50 mm (2 in) long. Radial spines to 14, to 15 mm (0.6 in) long. Flowers straight or slightly curved above the pericarpels, white or tinged pale greenish or pinkish, to 5.5 cm (2.2 in) long and 0.9 cm (0.4 in) in diameter; perianth parts spreading; styles long-exserted.
