The garden, founded in 1890 and state supported, is located in Sycamore Canyon above one of the largest university campuses in the United States. The garden has an area of 13 hectares (32 acres), and succulents constitute a fifth of the collection; cacti make up the main part of this and the origin of about 70% of them is documented. Specimens collected by M. Cárdenas, S. B. Hogan, P. C. Hutchison, A. B. Lau, R. Moran, M. Kimnach, W. Krahn, F. Ritter, R. Rodin, and J. West are present in the garden. The garden is a member of the Center for Plant Conservation.
