Matucana gen nov

Usually simple, small and globular, rarely elongated; ribs numerous, broad, low, somewhat tubercled; areoles approximate, very woolly when young, with numerous acicular or bristly spines; flower slender, tubular, scarlet, with a narrow limb; scales on the ovary and flower-tube scattered, naked in their axils; fr uit not known.

Type species: Echinocactus haynei Otto.

The genus as known to us consists of one species, confined to the high mountains of central Peru. The generic name is that of the small village in central Peru near which the type species grows.
